A história gira em torno de Shugo e Rena, dois irmãos gêmeos que foram sorteados com os avatares de dois dos lendários ”.hackers” (Kite e Black Rose) ao criarem suas contas no MMORPG ”The World”. Devido ao divórcio de seus pais, os dois se separaram quando ainda eram menores e acabaram achando no jogo uma possibilidade fácil e conveniente de se encontrarem.
Quando ambos decidem ir treinar em uma área para iniciantes, são encurralados por um monstro extremamente forte e que, por razões óbvias, não deveria estar lá.
